No Checked Shirts w/ Don’t Panic and Kangol

I’ve been asked many times why I have such a disliking for checked shirts (or plaid to my American cousins). The fact that it is the staple garment of the hipster uniform, means wherever I go looks like Topman threw up, ate some Skittles, and then threw up again. The surfeit of the overlapping colours offends my eyes and sensibility greatly.

I used to like checked shirts; the old flannel ones are comfortable and homely. Now – I just think wistfully of the bygone era. I get called a hater because I’m told that I don’t like it because everyone else likes it. Untrue, I like lots of things that other people like, like skinny jeans (not on guys) and insane hats.

“I must confess/I really do detest
Checked Shirts”

To me, checked shirts are only good for two things.
1. Impromptu Picnics
and;
2. Putting out fires

With every Tom, Dick, Harry, Sally, Florian in possession of one, or several this has got to stop. Y’all look like Topman threw up on you.

Don’t Panic and myself are running the ‘NO CHECKED SHIRTS’ photo slam on Sunday 2 May between 11am-6pm by the Sunday Upmarket in Brick Lane where I will be picking out supremely stylish individuals who DON’T rock a checked shirt in a photo slam.

If you are wearing one, and you want to be in the picture, you gotta take it off. But don’t worry about hiding your modesty. Kangol, streetwear hat surveyors supreme have provided some stylin’ hats from their SS10 collection which you photo subjects will be rocking in the photos.

Pictures will be uploaded to Don’t Panic Online on the following Tuesday, the 4th of May. The first 8 to spot themselves and email in win a hat from Kangol’s SS10 collection.

But not only that, 3 winners will also be picked who exemplify street style and individuality will win an exclusive hat from the Kangol x Liberty collaboration.

Leave the tablecloth at home or do some sit-ups or shade in your abs Robert Pattinson-style, and pop down and look for me and my photog between 11 and 6 on Sunday – I’ll be the one burning an effigy of flannel. Or follow me on twitter.com/thisisthebang to find out where I’ll be moving around to.

Check out the event details on Facebook here. And no this will not be another American Apparel. The fact I have discounted checked shirts has dramatically decreased my audience by 87%*

*statistics proven by no-one.

Political Slap

I missed the live debate today because I was too busy with make-up and I didn’t get to furiously tweet to my liking.  So as I received a new Barry M Lipstick in their newest shade, Robot Blue… I thought I’d try something with it.

The Vuitton Heads

Came across this article on Jezebel today… here’s an excerpt:

When this picture of Louis Vuitton’s most recent show cast was posted by LOVE, it was unexpectedly linked on Reddit. Predictably, the majority of the 1700+ comments left by Reddit’s overwhelmingly male readership are rabid criticisms of the women’s looks.

I find it also highly interesting that many of the models in this composite are the same women that men, particularly I would think the users of Reddit lust over, are in this composite, unairbrushed and un made-up. Specifically Alessandra Ambrosio, Elle Macpherson, Laetitia Casta, and ex M&S lingerie model, Noemie Lenoir.

Read the article. Men are stupid.

Days where I don’t need to wave my pass around furiously

AKA Press Days.

Do you like what I did there?

I do apologise, gentle readers, if you were anticipating posts on the press days I have attended. Firstly I keep forgetting when they’re on (I need a diary), secondly I keep falling asleep at inopportunate times. This is not because I’m extremely lazy, which is something no-one can accuse me of, but it’s because I am just getting over the flu and have no idea how I caught it.

I haven’t been working in this fashion game very long (about 6 or so months) but I have come in leaps and bounds from just my initial fashion blog posts. But I am getting my name out there, and meeting lots of fabbo people and most importantly getting to touch lots of beautiful clothes. (MMM SILK)

I will write a short summary of the press days I have attended so far, and there will be more posts to come, on a more regular basis.

Also London based fans (haha fans, I made a joke) – keep this Sunday free. That’s all I’m saying now. Keep the eyes peeled, and I will enlighten you tomorrow.

Maaike Mekking for Double Magazine

Maaike Mekking is this fantastic Dutch designer based in London, and I first saw her AW10 collection last Fashion Week this February. Of course I then had to shoot it, and I used some of her SS10 and AW10 pieces in my shoot for Double Magazine‘s Spiritual Issue.

I’ve got a great response from her, glad she likes it as I loved shooting her pieces! Check out the lovely blog post by her about myself and Daniel!

Btw I’m working on a new editorial… watch this space.

Katie Gallagher

Whilst doing my general reading of er… my fashion reading, I found an interview by Katie Gallagher whom I interviewed for esper issue 04, which was my first issue in the capacity of fashion editor.

It’s top banana to see Katie getting great press, cos she’s an incredible designer with extraordinary vision who believe it or not, has only done two collections. And is the same age as I. I wish I was in NY so I could shoot some of her pieces because I don’t think the metal armour dress will make it through customs…

And she was one of the two Katies’ I interviewed for issue 04, who are both based in New York, both with cats, and both extremely talented, and both the same age. Crazy.

Check out the interview I did with Katie Gallagher below.
