What to Watch Tonight: VICE on HBO

Last night, I went to HBO HQ in Bryant Park for the premiere of VICE, Vice’s new TV show on HBO (I know it’s confusing) for salty nuts and wine in plastic cups from unionised bartenders. I can’t explain things well so watch this hereto video.

VICE, a news magazine series that will premiere exclusively on HBO, smashes barriers of decorum to cover such stories as out-of-control political assassinations in the Philippines, the sumo/Mixed Martial Arts craze that has swept Senegal and the precarious nuclear stare-down in Kashmir.

The first two episodes were shown, featuring failed suicide bombers, the Kashmir border conflict, as well as  a clip from their visit to North Korea with Dennis Rodman and the Harlem Globetrotters. If you’ve ever seen any of the VICE documentaries before, they’re pretty powerful and uncomfortable stuff.  As there was a Q&A afterwards, I felt I wanted to ask a question because I feel I don’t contribute enough to things like these. However, all the questions seemed mostly legit, and my question was rather foolish, and as my mother now tells me I’m on the wrong side of 25, I feel now is a time to learn to shut up. So I simply coerced Shane Smith with a beer afterwards to ask the most pertinent and important question in the history of Q&As:

“Do people have to genuflect and kiss the ring?”

Shane laughed and said he would make people do it. I hope he does.

VICE premieres exclusively on HBO on April 5th at 11pm EST. Other documentaries can be seen on the VICE YouTube channel.
(If you don’t have HBO, I’m sure they won’t mind you finding another way to watch it. BTW I am not condoning any illegal nefarious activity)

Prabal Gurung for Target Event for NYFW

Prabal Gurung for Target Launch

Twas the night before NYFW, and this lady blogger was not being her usual antisocial self and decided to attend events. When this invite dropped into my inbox I was all:

Jonah Hill Happy Scream

I am rather fond of prints, and Prabal Gurung is one of my utmost favourite collections to see every season. I’m usually very leery of high street collabs, I have a Target x Mulberry bag which the strap broke, which showed that it pretty much had been stapled on, but then I also purchased the Band of Outsiders cashmere hats from the Neiman Marcus x Target collab and they were fantastic, although the overall collection wasn’t well received. So it’s a mixed bag really.

Prabal Gurung for Target Launch

Target has really been stepping up their fashion game of late, from the High Fashion ads for their Everyday Collection to pushing Target Style, their hitting all bases social campaign. This event was no less than what I would have expected, and much more than I ever expected. Target transformed Pier 57 into an indoor fairground complete with rides, a cinema showing the campaign film starring Olivia Thirlby, the face of the collection, photo booth, games where you could win Target vouchers, speciality drinks, a fortune teller, various food trucks, a stilt lady with candy floss on her legs, rides that actually you were allowed to ride which I stayed away from for fear of throwing up the dumplings, mini fish taco, and whoopie pie I ate.

Prabal Gurung for Target Launch The food was spectacular, presentation very on point. Oh but the wastage… but on the other hand miniature Coke bottles.

A special live performance from Ne-Yo ended the evening, since the inspiration for this collection was LOVE, and who does the best love R’n'B love songs of this generation?

Prabal Gurung for Target Launch

Laziest photo taking ever. I do like Ne-Yo but I don’t like crowds.

My idol and love of my life Rashida Jones, Carey Mulligan and that girl from ANTM who was in Crazy, Stupid, Love were also there. I tried to sneak a picture of Rashida but bloody Just Jared got in the way so this is my picture.

When the Ann’s away, the mice get perms.

Most importantly WE WERE ALLOWED TO PURCHASE THE COLLECTION BEFORE ALL THE PLEBS  GENERAL PUBLIC. I’m looking forward to all these press turning up to Lincoln Center wearing the same jacket. Not all of the collection was there, such as the sandals in different colourways.

I purchased the dress that Olivia Thirlby was walking around in, because the top of my choice had sold out. I was quite impressed. Some of the things were a little too tacky for my liking, the high sheen factor of artificial materials will do that, but the majority of the items felt great, nice and weighty and finished rather well. I also mused over the red sandals but I was on the fence about it as I preferred the black and white ones in the first place (which are a Target.com exclusive), and some of the soles were unfinished, so I didn’t purchase.

Short-sleeve dress in First Date print and black, $39.99; wedge sandals in Apple red, $29.99

Alas this dress does not fit over my ample bosom, so I have to return it. Such is life. But on the whole, the collection is pretty mint. Son, I am not disappoint.

Prabal Gurung for Target launches in stores and on Target.com on February 10th 2013.
Prices range from $12.99 (approx £9)to $199.99 (approx £130)

Bradelis is a Japanese lingerie brand which recently opened their third store in NY, which has a novel 3 step system for shaping and enhancing your lady lumps. The 1st step is to sculpt your breasts, drawing the excess tissue (their words) into your chest; 2nd step is to sculpt and contour your chest (so they’re perky) and the 3rd step is designed to enhance. It’s a workout for your breasts, without actually working out. There’s also a 3 step for your butt.

Each step has different bras, and since your shape is supposed to change, you get free alterations and counselling (yes that’s right) for the lifetime of your garment. Not bad eh? One of the Bradelis girls told me she’d gone up by 2 cup sizes. Since I’ve got a Step 1 bra, so I’m really hoping that doesn’t happen to my copious cleavage. But time will tell eh?

Watch David Blaine Get (Almost) Electrocuted (I mean Electrified) This Weekend!

David Blaine: Electrified Press Conference by Intel Ultrabook

Wait David Blaine is still relevant? (Was that rude, I regret nothing) I thought he was in retirement, but when the invitation to his press conference for ELECTRIFIED dropped into my inbox, I was much too curious not to go. The possibility that he might get electrocuted was a huge bonus.

This trailer tells you nothing so don’t watch it.

On a rainy Tuesday on Pier 54, a bunch of journalists huddled under a tent while David Blaine explained what he was doing and reminded us that he still has a mortgage to pay why he was doing it. I knew I wouldn’t remember so I filmed it. He said he was inspired by Tesla (what what) and he wanted to recreate that scene from The Prestige (sic). Personally I was more bothered about the waste of energy. Global warming anyone?

Don’t get me wrong, I used to have a major crush on David Blaine. So much so I considered standing under his Glass Box in Tower Bridge with a sign saying I would take him for a Big Mac after he got out. Then I saw him throw his literal shit sack out the box and I went off him.

That is a groan you hear, because the bathroom thing came up. *shudder*

Blaine gets in a special chainmail suit (the kind divers wear when they go diving with Great Whites) and is enclosed in seven Tesla coils which are transmitting (transponding?) a million volts of electricity. One important thing to note is that Blaine is not allowed to touch his face, so has to stand there with his arms in the air for 72 hours, a bit like an electric Messiah, because he might electrocute himself.

Totes amaze brah.

The possibility for shenanigans is too great, but I will resist. You might think it looks a bit crap, but we press did not get the full show, because why would we. NOBODY CARES ABOUT US. Also because, it was raining, they were still building it, etc etc. He ends this on Monday with a “shocking” finale. (PUN INTENDED)

Deal With It

Global viewers can watch a livestream on YouTube or if you’re not in the United States of Freedom *cough* or parts of the world where Google is tantamount to eating a baby, you can watch on LeTV (China).

David Blaine: Electrified – One Million Volts Always On is sponsored by Intel Ultrabook and is running 5-8 October.
Free admission.
Doors open tonight at 6.30PM on Pier 54/Hudson River Park, W14th St, New York.

There’s no Mitchells at this Wolford Social

Phil Mitchell

Who liked my EastEnders pun?

The Wolford Social with Bangs and a Bun

Always keen to meet fellow bloggers and look at underwear, I headed to the Bangs and a Bun hosted event at Wolford for their first ever Wolford Social, at Westfield, Shepherds Bush. Quelle horreur. Ever since Westfield threw open their doors in Stratford, I’ve rarely ventured past Oxford Circus in most recent times. Also, the other Westfield doesn’t have athletes wandering around. Just lots of Arabs shopping.

A bit like this but with more Gucci bags.

Wolford, as I learnt today, is not British, which I’m not sure why I thought it was, but Austrian. Some of the best things come out of Austria, like Captain von Trapp. I also learnt that Wolford doesn’t just make hosiery but a whole wardrobe of dresses, skirts, jackets, tops, shapewear…

Bangs and a Bun aka Mureiann (pronounced Mirren like Helen) did not have a bun today, and I almost didn’t recognise her. Blasphemy!

The Wolford Social with Bangs and a Bun

The Wolford Social with Bangs and a Bun

The advent of social networks means it’s perfectly reasonable to refer to people by their Twitter names and chat like you’re best friends. I do it, and fling my arms around complete strangers with reckless abandon. It’s not really the British way so I should stop that.

The Wolford Social with Bangs and a Bun

There were a couple of gorgeous lingerie models walking around, including a Claudia Schiffer doppelganger who I think both thought I was very adorably young because I started squealing over their pom pom headbands. Sometimes I think my presence causes broodiness. They were also very sweet and said I’d look wonderful with one.

But lets face it, I am pretty adorable.

It was a delightful evening, chilled out, with good music, nail art, and great company. My only criticism stems from that Wolford do not do bras to fit my oversized cartoon breasts. I always know it, except when it happens, it’s still sad.

Levi’s Print Workshop with Anthony Burrill – 13th July to 3rd Aug #PrintLondon

Levi's Print London Workshop with Anthony Burrill

The joys of full time employment is that I no longer have to worry so much about money and cobbling together my pennies for travel. The downside is that I can no longer rock up to things in the middle of the day. Luckily Levi’s began their Print London workshop at 8am, enough time to head over, have some breakfast and get to work on time. And *bonus* onus, at 8am, it isn’t as busy.

Levi's Print London Workshop with Anthony Burrill

I headed to the Regent Street flagship for the launch of the Levi’s Print Workshop in conjunction with graphic artist and typographist (is that a word? COINED IT) Anthony Burrill. The Print Workshop is the fifth of its kind for Levi’s and is running during the Olympics, following previous workshops in San Fran, LA, New York and Berlin.

Levi's Print London Workshop with Anthony Burrill

Levi's Print London Workshop with Anthony Burrill

There are three iconic graphics created by Mr Burrill; THE CITY IS OURS TONIGHT – DO YOU KNOW WHERE YOU ARE? and THIS IS NOT THE WEST which is only available in the Levi’s in Boxpark in Shoreditch. Because, obviously, the East is where it’s at.

Levi's Print London Workshop with Anthony Burrill

Our print for the day (Thursday) was WORDS HAVE POWER. Damn straight. The power of the word is mightier than the sword.

I was scared that I was going to burn myself, which is nothing new, considering I burn myself on an almost everyday occurrence, but success! I didn’t, and now I have a new t-shirt which gives people even more of an excuse to look at my chest!

Additionally, if you fancy yourself as a bit of a wordsmith, you can get involved by tweeting @Levis_UK with the hashtag #PrintLondon with your own bit of lyrical genius. Tweet a Londonesque quote of 6 words or less, and if it’s the most popular that day, it’ll be the print graphic for the next day in the live workshop. If you’re around the area, you can also pop into store and pin it to the memo board.

Inside USA Network’s Political Animals Premiere + Afterparty

USA Network’s new show Political Animals premiered on the 25th at the Morgan Library and Museum in Manhattan.  I love museum venues, and this one, which I hadn’t heard of before, once housed the rare books collection of American banking tycoon, J.P.  Morgan.  It was very cool to explore, although the small space made it a bit crowded (press had to view the screening in the lobby while regular guests got to go to a legit screening room).

Political Animals Premiere and Afterparty

USA outfitted the entire place with giant red, white and blue balloons in keeping with the theme of the show- which, if you couldn’t tell, centres around American politics.

Political Animals Premiere and Afterparty

Actually the show is basically a soap-y dramatized version of the Hillary Clinton story, starring Sigourney Weaver as a former First Lady turned Presidental Candidate turned Secretary of State, and Ciaran Hinds as the sleazy ex President.

Political Animals Premiere and Afterparty

I am (or used to be) obsessed with politics and basically worship Hillary Clinton if you didn’t know (I once volunteered for her campaign, and would go on possessed rants about all the unjust sexism I’d see in the media) so theoretically this show is right up my alley.  It’s not a bad show, but it’s very heavyhanded and the dialogue is too on the nose (which means the characters unrealistically say exactly what they feel exactly when they feel it).   It is a summer show on USA though, and not HBO or anything, so I can’t fault it or anything.  I also enjoy that there is an Asian character.

On the other hand, the event itself was highly enjoyable, with both a photobooth and gift bags containing branded animal crackers and t-shifts.

Political Animals Premiere and Afterparty

I joked I would somehow charm creator Greg Berlanti into giving me a writing job on one of his shows but chickened out of talking to him (it was a bad day: I had to endure a pervert in an empty subway car going there).   An actor he worked with did tell me he is one of the nicest, most genuine people in Hollywood.  That is of course, completely expected: as if an asshole could create the sensitive father/ son drama Everwood.

Greg Berlanti, phwoar.

He is also extremely, extremely good looking- not even good looking for a writer, but good looking by general standards to.  Prompting me to wonder why someone with looks like that would choose to write if he could act/ model/ run for political office instead.  Actually, this was something that Carla Gugino said to some wannabe journalist in the show, except with porn star as top in the list of options.   Never mind, I take it back, Political Animals is a good show.  Go watch it.

Givenchy, Dahlia and Me

Givenchy Dahlia Noir Launch @ Il Bottacio, Mayfair

I headed over to the Givenchy launch of their new lady fragrance, Dahlia Noir at Il Bottacio yesterday after work. The event started at 5, but I didn’t get there until 6 whereas I missed the talk from the managing director of Givenchy UK. Ah, dear.

Dahlia Noir is the 2012 release of the previous Dahlia Noir fragrance back in 2011. Upon heading up the candlelit stairs (although I did feel a bit like Giles when he found the body of Jenny Calendar) I was greeted with a waft of Dahlia Noir and a Givenchy bar.

Givenchy Dahlia Noir Launch @ Il Bottacio, Mayfair
Do you think I could get one of these in my house?

Dahlia Noir comes in EDT and EDP versions and is launching in August (with a 10 day exclusive in July to Harrods, natch). I’m no olfactorialist but I do know what I like. The fragrance specialist (doctor? scientist?) wafted a cloud of Dahlia Noir Parfum under my nose and it smelt like scented powder, the kind your mother used to have, but more flowery and lighter. I also found it quite comforting, but also a romantic but peppery sort. Crikey.

Givenchy Dahlia Noir Launch @ Il Bottacio, Mayfair

The Givenchy fragrance specialist then handed me the EDT which was a whole other ballpark. She told me it was ‘luminous’ and ‘galloping over the hills at full force’(sic). Well I don’t know about that, but it was a lot brighter, and fruitier. Smelt like an expensive fruity cocktail. But the classy kind that you get in upscale hotel bars and restaurants, not happy hour at the place around the corner.

The name did throw me off, as I was expecting a much heavier fragrance, but Dahlia Noir is definitely a surprise. The ad campaign stars Tisci muse, Mariacarla Bosco and is shot in black and white with lots of abstraction and clean shapes. I tried to get some stills of it, but alas, it’s not out until July.

Il Bottacio is a beautiful event space in Mayfair where I’ve been to a lot of fancy press days with glittery biscuits(?) and as always was the perfect excuse to pull out my new Fujifilm X10 and take pictures, of which I know now how to use the camera. I also discovered the black and white film mode – simulating black and white film photography in three different settings and decided to try it out.
