Prabal Gurung for Target Event for NYFW

Prabal Gurung for Target Launch

Twas the night before NYFW, and this lady blogger was not being her usual antisocial self and decided to attend events. When this invite dropped into my inbox I was all:

Jonah Hill Happy Scream

I am rather fond of prints, and Prabal Gurung is one of my utmost favourite collections to see every season. I’m usually very leery of high street collabs, I have a Target x Mulberry bag which the strap broke, which showed that it pretty much had been stapled on, but then I also purchased the Band of Outsiders cashmere hats from the Neiman Marcus x Target collab and they were fantastic, although the overall collection wasn’t well received. So it’s a mixed bag really.

Target has really been stepping up their fashion game of late, from the High Fashion ads for their Everyday Collection to pushing Target Style, their hitting all bases social campaign. This event was no less than what I would have expected, and much more than I ever expected. Target transformed Pier 57 into an indoor fairground complete with rides, a cinema showing the campaign film starring Olivia Thirlby, the face of the collection, photo booth, games where you could win Target vouchers, speciality drinks, a fortune teller, various food trucks, a stilt lady with candy floss on her legs, rides that actually you were allowed to ride which I stayed away from for fear of throwing up the dumplings, mini fish taco, and whoopie pie I ate.

A special live performance from Ne-Yo ended the evening, since the inspiration for this collection was LOVE, and who does the best love R’n'B love songs of this generation?

Laziest photo taking ever. I do like Ne-Yo but I don’t like crowds.

My idol and love of my life Rashida Jones, Carey Mulligan and that girl from ANTM who was in Crazy, Stupid, Love were also there. I tried to sneak a picture of Rashida but bloody Just Jared got in the way so this is my picture.

When the Ann’s away, the mice get perms.

Most importantly WE WERE ALLOWED TO PURCHASE THE COLLECTION BEFORE ALL THE PLEBS  GENERAL PUBLIC. I’m looking forward to all these press turning up to Lincoln Center wearing the same jacket. Not all of the collection was there, such as the sandals in different colourways.

I purchased the dress that Olivia Thirlby was walking around in, because the top of my choice had sold out. I was quite impressed. Some of the things were a little too tacky for my liking, the high sheen factor of artificial materials will do that, but the majority of the items felt great, nice and weighty and finished rather well. I also mused over the red sandals but I was on the fence about it as I preferred the black and white ones in the first place (which are a Target.com exclusive), and some of the soles were unfinished, so I didn’t purchase.

Short-sleeve dress in First Date print and black, $39.99; wedge sandals in Apple red, $29.99

Alas this dress does not fit over my ample bosom, so I have to return it. Such is life. But on the whole, the collection is pretty mint. Son, I am not disappoint.

Prabal Gurung for Target launches in stores and on Target.com on February 10th 2013.
Prices range from $12.99 (approx £9)to $199.99 (approx £130)

Levi’s Print Workshop with Anthony Burrill – 13th July to 3rd Aug #PrintLondon

Levi's Print London Workshop with Anthony Burrill

The joys of full time employment is that I no longer have to worry so much about money and cobbling together my pennies for travel. The downside is that I can no longer rock up to things in the middle of the day. Luckily Levi’s began their Print London workshop at 8am, enough time to head over, have some breakfast and get to work on time. And *bonus* onus, at 8am, it isn’t as busy.

I headed to the Regent Street flagship for the launch of the Levi’s Print Workshop in conjunction with graphic artist and typographist (is that a word? COINED IT) Anthony Burrill. The Print Workshop is the fifth of its kind for Levi’s and is running during the Olympics, following previous workshops in San Fran, LA, New York and Berlin.

There are three iconic graphics created by Mr Burrill; THE CITY IS OURS TONIGHT – DO YOU KNOW WHERE YOU ARE? and THIS IS NOT THE WEST which is only available in the Levi’s in Boxpark in Shoreditch. Because, obviously, the East is where it’s at.

Our print for the day (Thursday) was WORDS HAVE POWER. Damn straight. The power of the word is mightier than the sword.

I was scared that I was going to burn myself, which is nothing new, considering I burn myself on an almost everyday occurrence, but success! I didn’t, and now I have a new t-shirt which gives people even more of an excuse to look at my chest!

Additionally, if you fancy yourself as a bit of a wordsmith, you can get involved by tweeting @Levis_UK with the hashtag #PrintLondon with your own bit of lyrical genius. Tweet a Londonesque quote of 6 words or less, and if it’s the most popular that day, it’ll be the print graphic for the next day in the live workshop. If you’re around the area, you can also pop into store and pin it to the memo board.

Adidas Originals x Opening Ceremony: Alternative Uses for a Bandana

My good friend John always has a bandana on his person because as he told me last weekend, that the possibilities are endless. He proceeded to demonstrate a couple, including but not limited to, a tourniquet, a wrist support, a garrot and general swagger. I’m not sure Adidas got that memo, but they’ve reworked some bandanas in their Olympic inspired collab with hipster haven, Opening Ceremony.

I’m also quite fond of Opening Ceremony – what does that say about me?

I don’t think you should use any of these pieces to strangle anyone you don’t particularly like, but I can get on board with it. Not seeing the Olympic association but shrugs.

Considering I’m also in Opening Ceremony – should I wear a bandana? I don’t think it’ll go with my sheep outfit though…

Adidas x Opening Ceremony collection will be available at the Opening Ceremony pop-up store, which will be situated in Covent Garden, London from July 19. You can also buy online  from Opening Ceremony US

TSoS Exclusive: Uniqlo x Marvel – A Conversation with Lee Garbett

When Uniqlo gave me a holla and asked if I wanted to come and interview Lee Garbett on the upcoming Uniqlo x Marvel t-shirt collab and release of  The Avengers movie (did you know it’s actually called Avengers Assemble? Madness!) I said yes, YES I WOULD.  To celebrate the launch of the Uniqlo x Marvel collaboration, two exclusive comic book masterclasses for the plebs, er, public were hosted at the Uniqlo Oxford Circus flagship and Uniqlo Westfield Stratford City store on Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd of April respectively.

Realising that although I enjoy comics and Spidey, but know next to nothing, I entrusted the help of my good friend Adrian to conduct the interview with Lee (that’s Mr Garbett to you) – which I told him on the morning when we both turned up to the Uniqlo head office.

But it all went without a hitch – remarkably. Firstly because Lee Garbett is awesome, secondly because Adrian is magnificent. I normally abhor interviews (which is why I never do them). My first interview was with the frontman of the band Jet, who was hopped up on er, various substances. Which wouldn’t have been a problem had he ANSWERED THE QUESTIONS. But I have to say, my reluctance to interview in the future has been abated – slightly.

All in all it was definitely one of my better journalistic (blogger?) experiences. And Adrian and I did go see Avengers (Assemble) the week after when it was released. I enjoyed it immensely, and unsurprisingly my favourite part was when Captain America is working out and the camera zooms in on dat ass. If you haven’t seen it, go see it – and stay for the Easter Egg - and in other news, the Avengers sequel has just been given a big GO.

Please see the fruits of mine and Adrian’s labours, the first (and hopefully not last) video from TSoS TV. I filmed this on a Sony Bloggie Sport (review coming soon) as I didn’t have a cameraman, and belatedly realised I should have had a mike if I was going to do an interview. Much sound editing later, most of the ambient noise is cut out – but if you can’t hear it – just put your volume on REALLY LOUD.

Lee even drew me a Spidey picture with a caption of my choice. Can you guess what it was?

UNIQLO has teamed up with the legendary Marvel to create a range of six t-shirts featuring unique pop art versions of the original Super hero illustrations. The collection is available in stores and online at UNIQLO.com priced at £14.90 each.

Thanks to Andrew Jones for research, Charlotte Hoyle for graphics and Francesco Grassi for editing.

Diet Coke x Jean Paul Gaultier Launch @ Harvey Nichols

For the launch of the Diet Coke x Jean Paul Gaultier special edition bottles, the Harvey Nichols Champagne Bar  was transformed into a pretty girly Parisian salon  decked in nautical stripes and printed cushions,  with Paperself eyelashes, special edition Diet Coke x Jean Paul Gaultier nail art, glitter body painting as well as gorgeous cocktails, along with the obligatory line up of Diet Coke bottles.

Diet Coke x JPG

As the Paris launch was held simultaneously, Hilary Alexander hosted the London launch, while JPG partied up in Paris. As the new creative director of Diet Coke this year, JPG’s two bottles were inspired by his most iconic silhouettes, Day, the nautical stripes (Le Male) and Night, the corset (Classique).

As usual I turned up looking like a ruffian and was ushered to have some eyelashes put on (aka polish a turd). Since I was wearing my glasses, this didn’t turn out to be the best of ideas, but as I wear them at the end of my nose, it wasn’t as bad. I did decline the offer of face painting, as once you get glitter on, you never GET IT OFF, but I got my nails did, as all you all know, I love getting my nails did. Unfortunately the nail art stickers started peeling off in the shower  after, but I did get a picture on my webcam, as well as the Paperself eyelashes, as I still have no camera.

You can also see a glimpse of my new Swatch New Gent Lacquered watch (which you will hear about very soon)

We were also treated to a performance by Leah Debincrat, a fusion belly dancer to celebrate JPG’s love and homage of the female form. Just watching her sinuous frame made me feel like I shouldn’t have eaten that second cake pop, as well as breakfast, lunch and that mini burger. Since there was a huge music delay, Leah stood for a while in silence, while we all watched also in silence, until I couldn’t take it anymore and asked my neighbour if the performance had started. Don’t judge me,  because ART DOESN’T ALWAYS MAKE SENSE.

Leah Debincrat at Diet Coke x JPG Launch
Good ol’ Billy No Mates me did make friends with fellow bloggers Marin Monroe and the official Diet Coke blogger Style It Light who was hugely entertained by me, even though I wasn’t actually being funny. Maybe she had a bit too much fizzy pop?

The highlight of my night was definitely having a sit down and chit chat with Hilary Alexander, although I started fangirling like an idiot, and subsequently she legged it. I apologise, I’m just not very cool. The conversation did start when she spotted my La Sardina Domino camera and took a picture of it as she liked how it matched my new Diet Coke nails – but damn you Blackberry cameras and your crappy flash! She would have tweeted me and that would have been my second claim to Twitter fame, after having a conversation with A-Trak about the merits of calling crockery, crockery over china.

Speaking of which, I still don’t have a camera or a phone that has internet, but I was kindly loaned two Lomography cameras, the La Sardina and the Sprocket Rocket. Time will tell (a day will tell, when I get the prints back) if the pictures came out…

And of course, I got the special edition Diet Coke x Jean Paul Gaultier gift set, with glass and the two bottles of Diet Coke, which I also took a dodgy webcam photo of. Thank you Diet Coke for a rather delightful evening!

The ‘Day’ and ‘Night’ bottles are available from Harvey Nichols from April 16. A third bottle, entitled ‘Tattoo’ and inspired by Gaultier’s love of body art, will be released later in the year.

Polar Opposites of Beauty

I’m not talking about what people find beautiful, or what appeals or doesn’t – but about two make up brands which I quite like but couldn’t be more different. When people ask me why I love make up (and how I should be more confident in myself and I don’t need it blah blah bullshit) it’s because it’s so much fun. I don’t get why taking time on your face makes you an insecure person. You know, doing your face is just fun.

Ben Wyatt sez it's funIT'S FUN, IT'S FUN

I went to the Rokit x Illamasqua event in Rokit’s Covent Garden store (where I also did the windows back in August) where myself and good friend Melina got our make-up did (and got personalised stockings from Rokit Recycled).

This could kind of be an outfit photo. Green arran sweater, courtesy of JAEGER. Pierre Cardin coat, VINTAGE, bought in Le Marais, Paris. ‘Made in England’ Brogues, courtesy of DR MARTENS. Nails: Barry M Cyan, my own, and Filthy/Gorgeous Tea Bird and Chanel Riva mixed – courtesy of FILTHY/GORGEOUS and CHANEL BEAUTY.

British brand Illamasqua has the most amazing store in Beak St (off Carnaby Street), and Alex Box, the founder of the brand, is not only an incredible make up artist, but has translated that to the most amazing colours and products. And they don’t test on animals, which is fantastic. You can sign up for in store and at their concessions for make up lessons (£30, fully redeemable on products) to learn some tips and tricks and how to add more drama to your look. Illamasqua will even kindly do your make up for free, if you’ve got a party or event to go to, and you need to change things up quick. Melina is already a beautiful creature, but add some polish to that and bam!

Melina and I at the Armani Exchange 20th Anniversary Party.

Swedish brand Pixi couldn’t be further from Illamasqua’s drama – Illasmasqua is Lisbeth Salander, whilst Pixi is Elsa Hosk. Neither are those are bad things, in fact, I love how make up is all about transformation and enhancement and being able to mix it up, or just keep it simple. Pixi’s flagship London boutique in Foubert’s Place (just around the corner from Illamasqua) is owned and run by make up artist Petra Strand who launched Pixi in 1999 with her two sisters.

Pixi & Illasmaqua Events

Pixi is all about fuss free, multi tasking products that enhance and make your skin glow which are infused with botanicals and plant ingredients. Makeup to Wakeup, Petra coins it. The store is one of the most cutest places I’ve ever been in, without being twee or trite. That’s a tall order. I used to shop in Pixi a lot when I was in college, I’d save my money and get my make up done around my birthday. It’s grown immensely in the past five years, Pixi is now also stocked in Boots in the UK, online at ASOS and in Target in the US.

I went along to the launch of the new Pixi x Tinkerbell collection in their flagship store, a 6 piece capsule collection launching for SS12 in collaboration with Disney, in line with Pixi’s ethos of easy fuss free radiant products. For once I had my mum’s camera with me (she wants it back) so I got to take some pictures in store.
