NYFW: Reem Acra

If you ever wanted proof of how shit I am at taking photos, the photos from Reem Acra would be enough. Sure the runway was black which was annoying enough, and I was using a borrowed camera but… ugh. These photos I’ve taken are probably the best out of a very bad bunch (I know right) so I’ve resorted to everyone’s mainstay, Style.com

What I loved about this collection and Reem Acra is that she has a way of making things that could be considered trashy, such as fishnet and sheer panels uber classy and elegant. One hopes to see a beautiful starlet wearing one of these on the red carpet soon. Or even better, one hopes to shoot some pieces from this collection soon. This was definitely my favourite show, and I am dead irritated over my super blurry photos…

NYFW: Herve Leger – Bondage and Sportswear

How do you evolve the eponymous bandage dress? By going two opposite directions, embellishment and sportswear. Add some fur, neoprene and bamf models and you have an instant hit. I didn’t think Max Azria could do anything different to his classic, but I think he did right here. I don’t really care for baseball caps, but I did like the fancy snapbacks. Can I pull one off?

Since I shot Herve Leger and BCBG for Cosmopolitan Russia for their March 2013 issue, they ticketed me, and with a nice surprise, front row seats. I usually hunker down in the pit because I’d rather stand than sit high up, but gosh did I feel loved in fashion. For once. Good seat, not the best photos though because I am rubbish at photography. Coco Rocha was sitting a few seats away and I was very tempted to take a blurry Instagram pic of her, hashtag it YOLO and see what she thought about that…

Prabal Gurung for Target Event for NYFW

Twas the night before NYFW, and this lady blogger was not being her usual antisocial self and decided to attend events. When this invite dropped into my inbox I was all:

I am rather fond of prints, and Prabal Gurung is one of my utmost favourite collections to see every season. I’m usually very leery of high street collabs, I have a Target x Mulberry bag which the strap broke, which showed that it pretty much had been stapled on, but then I also purchased the Band of Outsiders cashmere hats from the Neiman Marcus x Target collab and they were fantastic, although the overall collection wasn’t well received. So it’s a mixed bag really.

Target has really been stepping up their fashion game of late, from the High Fashion ads for their Everyday Collection to pushing Target Style, their hitting all bases social campaign. This event was no less than what I would have expected, and much more than I ever expected. Target transformed Pier 57 into an indoor fairground complete with rides, a cinema showing the campaign film starring Olivia Thirlby, the face of the collection, photo booth, games where you could win Target vouchers, speciality drinks, a fortune teller, various food trucks, a stilt lady with candy floss on her legs, rides that actually you were allowed to ride which I stayed away from for fear of throwing up the dumplings, mini fish taco, and whoopie pie I ate.

The food was spectacular, presentation very on point. Oh but the wastage… but on the other hand miniature Coke bottles.

A special live performance from Ne-Yo ended the evening, since the inspiration for this collection was LOVE, and who does the best love R’n'B love songs of this generation?

My idol and love of my life Rashida Jones, Carey Mulligan and that girl from ANTM who was in Crazy, Stupid, Love were also there. I tried to sneak a picture of Rashida but bloody Just Jared got in the way so this is my picture.

Most importantly WE WERE ALLOWED TO PURCHASE THE COLLECTION BEFORE ALL THE ~~PLEBS~~ GENERAL PUBLIC. I’m looking forward to all these press turning up to Lincoln Center wearing the same jacket. Not all of the collection was there, such as the sandals in different colourways.

I purchased the dress that Olivia Thirlby was walking around in, because the top of my choice had sold out. I was quite impressed. Some of the things were a little too tacky for my liking, the high sheen factor of artificial materials will do that, but the majority of the items felt great, nice and weighty and finished rather well. I also mused over the red sandals but I was on the fence about it as I preferred the black and white ones in the first place (which are a Target.com exclusive), and some of the soles were unfinished, so I didn’t purchase.

Alas this dress does not fit over my ample bosom, so I have to return it. Such is life. But on the whole, the collection is pretty mint. Son, I am not disappoint.

Benetton “The Art of Knit” Pop Up

I popped along to Benetton’s first ever pop up concept store, The Art of Knit in New York’s SoHo (area so named because it’s south of Houston Street. Soho in London is thought to named after a hunting cry). I know things.

I do have a confession to make. I enjoy summer because it’s brighter and the longer days and it’s warmer, but I cannot deal with extremes of weather. What can I say, I’m a Brit. Mild is how we like it best. Too much sun gives me a migraine. I just got an extra freckle because of the bloody American sun! It may not be a surprise that I’m waiting for cooler weather to come. Mainly because it’s really humid. But also so I can layer up.

Why do I like layering? Because I like to wear more clothes. Summer requires a lot less clothing, and it’s hard to showcase my fabulous wardrobe which is understandably, tailored for cooler climes. Namely, knitwear. I love a good cardigan. I fear these words will come back to haunt me as the weather turns and I start whining about how cold it is.

Upon arriving, I was greeted by this:

Needless to say I was quite tickled because I am a pervert. The rather saucy sculptures, named LANA SUTRA were created by artist Erik Ravelo, who is part of FABRICA, the art collective who designed the space and the pieces in the pop up. The store is blocked by colour and men’s and womenswear are all mixed together. Upon entering the store assistant gleefully pointed out that I matched the first (green) display. That was completely unintentional.

Gant by Michael Bastian SS13: Where was Bonus Jonas?

A lot of people I’ve spoken to are like “Gant, meh” – but I like their brand of preppy on acid/so chill brah wear. Mallard embroidered trousers – I can dig it. SS13′s presentation was inspired by the Galapagos, and thanks to a last minute invite from Gant’s UK PR, Halpern, I was off up and away downtown at the Industria Superstudios. No model torture here, as they had their own designated waterboy (no lie!) and they smiled, laughed and danced along to M.I.A. There were too many mandals and unattractive man shoes for my liking, and some seriously “interesting” styling but more importantly a full bar of Appleton Estate cocktails (served in tea cups – how did they know I was British?) and PRINTS!

My sour point was when I got shoved out the way for the Jonas Brothers, I kid you not. The Jonas Brothers. I noticed they’re no longer wearing their chastity rings. Also they’re short.

Michael Kors SS13 – New Order of Colour #nyfw

You knew it was gonna be a good show once you heard the strains of New Order’s Bizarre Love Triangle (my favourite New Order song after Blue Monday) and a double runway. The orchestral mix up with the Vitamin String Quartet and the dance version matched the fun of what Michael Kors is about, it’s wearable, colourful and just about having a good time, with some jazzing up with cyberpunk sunglasses. Hair was neat and models were fresh faced. My girl Karlie Kloss closed the show, and as everyone was on their feet when Mr Kors came out at the end, I thought to myself: “There’s always some bint whose head gets in the way.”

I Only Care About What’s On Your Feet #nyfw

With every fashion week, you get hundreds of people toting SLRs (hundreds may be an overestimate) frantically snapping away for the in the hopes of becoming the next Sartorialist. Whatever. I don’t care about what you’re wearing, (and my favourite street style snappers are Bill Cunningham and Tommy Ton). I only care for your accessoires. (I’m hoping that’s the French)

Fashion Week Essentials: The Stunnas

Ever wonder why Anna Wintour is always wearing her sunnies front row at all fashion shows? IT’S BECAUSE THE LIGHTS ARE SO FUCKING BRIGHT.

It’s not that she’s trying to be cool, it’s that her eyes will hurt.

I usually wear my glasses rather than my contacts, yet I have been known to put my sunglasses on top. If it’s not raining, I’ll wear my sunglasses. Mainly because I don’t have to make eye contact with anyone and it makes me look more menacing. Also sunglasses hide a multitude of sins.

I’m loyally wedded to my Top Gun reissue Ray Ban aviators, which were a 21st birthday present, and universally flattering. Even if they’re not, I’ll still wear them. However I have amassed a collection of glasses and sunglasses. But I’d really like a pair of these Victoria Kelsey sunglasses.

I came across Victoria Kelsey as she was a finalist in the Wolf and Badger Graduate Design Awards 2011 (which I couldn’t attend the party as I had too much fucking work to do, as usual). Sadly she didn’t win, but this young designer is sure to go far. And I rarely wear jewellery (apart from watches, mainly cos I don’t remember to wear it) but sunglasses as jewellery is a remarkable and rather winning concept. For me anyway.

And they also come in plain frames. Capital!
