Fashion Week Essentials: The Stunnas

Ever wonder why Anna Wintour is always wearing her sunnies front row at all fashion shows? IT’S BECAUSE THE LIGHTS ARE SO FUCKING BRIGHT.

It’s not that she’s trying to be cool, it’s that her eyes will hurt.

I usually wear my glasses rather than my contacts, yet I have been known to put my sunglasses on top. If it’s not raining, I’ll wear my sunglasses. Mainly because I don’t have to make eye contact with anyone and it makes me look more menacing. Also sunglasses hide a multitude of sins.

I’m loyally wedded to my Top Gun reissue Ray Ban aviators, which were a 21st birthday present, and universally flattering. Even if they’re not, I’ll still wear them. However I have amassed a collection of glasses and sunglasses. But I’d really like a pair of these Victoria Kelsey sunglasses.

Victoria Kelsey Sunglasses

I came across Victoria Kelsey as she was a finalist in the Wolf and Badger Graduate Design Awards 2011 (which I couldn’t attend the party as I had too much fucking work to do, as usual). Sadly she didn’t win, but this young designer is sure to go far. And I rarely wear jewellery (apart from watches, mainly cos I don’t remember to wear it) but sunglasses as jewellery is a remarkable and rather winning concept. For me anyway.

And they also come in plain frames. Capital!

A LFW Presentation you all can go to (and should go): Charlie May SS11 14th September 2011

Us bloggers do not only have one string to our bow. Charlie May aka Girl A La Mode is a fellow blogger, and designer, launching her first RTW collection this London Fashion Week for SS11. And everyone can go. All you have to do is RSVP to INFO@CHARLIE-MAY.CO.UK

Lots of people ask me how you can go to shows and the ilk, but you require press accreditation. But there are many great smaller designers, such as Charlie May, which you should so check out.

The Style Crusader also has some great behind the scenes photos of Charlie in her studio also.

If you’re based in London or the surrounding areas and you can make it down, I highly suggest you do.

LFW SS11: Nicole Farhi

Having slept all through Day 3 of LFW on Sunday, I promised myself (and my editor) that I would force myself to attend the last three days. Onwards and upwards. And I was joined by the lovely Sarah Mei. It’s nice to have a companion for shows.

Although it was a nightmare finding Nicole Farhi. Having not have had half of my invites turn up due to slack PRs/postal system, my faithful fashion friends on Twitter kindly directed me to the Royal Opera House.

Having been placed on a somewhat plinth, myself and Miss Mei settled in for the show…

LFW SS11: All Walks Beyond The Catwalk presents: SNAPPED by Rankin

When I stepped onto that terrace at Somerset House the second day of LFW, I was at a loss for words. For anyone who’s ever met me, you’ll know how scarce that is. I rarely get star-struck. You should ask my friends. Mainly because I don’t realise who most people are. Or I know the most inane celebrities (hey, check him out, he’s from Hollyoaks!). I spent most of NYFW simultaneously offending and confusing various well known* people by going up to them with my camera and asking if I could take a picture because everyone else was doing it, and btw did they have a new album out or something?**

Going on at 10am on the second day of LFW, on a Saturday morning was ‘the’ Rankin (I wasn’t as starstruck, I apologise. I met Rankin during Rankin Live. But I was still hella excited) doing a live shoot for All Walks Beyond The Catwalk. Set up by Debra Bourne, Caryn Franklin and Erin O’Connor, the All Walks campaign, now in it’s third season, is responsible for and committed to broadening the narrow guidelines for the models used for London Fashion Week, specifically widening the net for age, size and ethnicity. Nine designers previewed their SS11 looks in the shoot; Alice Temperley, Antonio Berardi, Betty Jackson, Giles Deacons, Hussein Chalayan, Matthew Williamson, Osman Yousefzada, Stella McCartney and Vivienne Westwood.

LFW SS11: Pierre Garroudi

After a quick pit-stop home to charge my camera and ingest some protein, I headed to Pierre Garroudi‘s studio in Crucifix Lane in the old railway arches behind London Bridge. At that point Fashion Fringe was also going on, but I wanted to support my home girls Lois and Mei. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

LFW SS11: Rocha

When leaving Osman I saw John Rocha lurking around the back of the tent smoking. Most designers I wouldn’t recognise, but blame it on the Debenham’s posters. Goodbye anonymity!

Due to the papal visit, there was no way for me to get to the Groucho for Cooperative Designs and get back in time for Rocha. So I sat tight. Aren’t pilgrims meant to walk? Get off the tube!

I prayed (oh the irony) that Rocha wouldn’t be a bust… nonetheless the security guards suffered a severe tongue lashing from myself and were in danger of meeting my fist…

LFW SS11: Osman (not my adorable friend from Sketchbook)

The ramshackle nature of LFW holds a certain kind of charm. This time, the charm had waned as it was even more slapdash than ever. What on earth was going on in that main tent? What was with the overzealous and enthusiastic manhandling by security? Where were the bottles of Chambord? It was only 3pm, and I was exhausted.
