Levi’s Print Workshop with Anthony Burrill – 13th July to 3rd Aug #PrintLondon

Levi's Print London Workshop with Anthony Burrill

The joys of full time employment is that I no longer have to worry so much about money and cobbling together my pennies for travel. The downside is that I can no longer rock up to things in the middle of the day. Luckily Levi’s began their Print London workshop at 8am, enough time to head over, have some breakfast and get to work on time. And *bonus* onus, at 8am, it isn’t as busy.

I headed to the Regent Street flagship for the launch of the Levi’s Print Workshop in conjunction with graphic artist and typographist (is that a word? COINED IT) Anthony Burrill. The Print Workshop is the fifth of its kind for Levi’s and is running during the Olympics, following previous workshops in San Fran, LA, New York and Berlin.

There are three iconic graphics created by Mr Burrill; THE CITY IS OURS TONIGHT – DO YOU KNOW WHERE YOU ARE? and THIS IS NOT THE WEST which is only available in the Levi’s in Boxpark in Shoreditch. Because, obviously, the East is where it’s at.

Our print for the day (Thursday) was WORDS HAVE POWER. Damn straight. The power of the word is mightier than the sword.

I was scared that I was going to burn myself, which is nothing new, considering I burn myself on an almost everyday occurrence, but success! I didn’t, and now I have a new t-shirt which gives people even more of an excuse to look at my chest!

Additionally, if you fancy yourself as a bit of a wordsmith, you can get involved by tweeting @Levis_UK with the hashtag #PrintLondon with your own bit of lyrical genius. Tweet a Londonesque quote of 6 words or less, and if it’s the most popular that day, it’ll be the print graphic for the next day in the live workshop. If you’re around the area, you can also pop into store and pin it to the memo board.

Adidas Originals x Opening Ceremony: Alternative Uses for a Bandana

My good friend John always has a bandana on his person because as he told me last weekend, that the possibilities are endless. He proceeded to demonstrate a couple, including but not limited to, a tourniquet, a wrist support, a garrot and general swagger. I’m not sure Adidas got that memo, but they’ve reworked some bandanas in their Olympic inspired collab with hipster haven, Opening Ceremony.

I’m also quite fond of Opening Ceremony – what does that say about me?

I don’t think you should use any of these pieces to strangle anyone you don’t particularly like, but I can get on board with it. Not seeing the Olympic association but shrugs.

Considering I’m also in Opening Ceremony – should I wear a bandana? I don’t think it’ll go with my sheep outfit though…

Adidas x Opening Ceremony collection will be available at the Opening Ceremony pop-up store, which will be situated in Covent Garden, London from July 19. You can also buy online  from Opening Ceremony US

Review: Estee Lauder Mad Men Collection Blush + Lipstick

First of all, I love Mad Men more than life itself. Okay, that’s not entirely true- at least this season it isn’t. Admittedly my life too suffers from ups and downs in quality, but this season has been uncharacteristically uneven. Nevertheless, Mad Men is still known as the little cable show that could. As AMC’s first scripted series, it put the scrappy channel on the map, and along the way, introduced the world to the glory that is Jon Hamm. And it is also a juggernaut in the fashion world, with its influence evident on catwalks since the very first season.

Surprisingly enough, with a plot centered around the Golden Age of the advertising industry, there have been relatively few media tie-in products capitalizing on its success. Most likely, Matthew Weiner, the notoriously anal showrunner, keeps a tight leash on the licensing rights. But in any case, in the years past, Mad Men has inspired a decidedly uninspired line at Banana Republic, and a line of limited edition Mad Men Barbie Dolls that little resembled the actors.

Constance Jablonski by Craig McDean for Estee Lauder Mad Men Collection.

This year, however, Estee Lauder teamed up with the show to introduce a limited edition creme rouge blush and lipstick set, in Evening Rose and Cherry, respectively. I’ve been drooling over them since it was announced three months ago, right when the current season first premiered. Estee Lauder was nice enough to provide a set for review, to coincide with the season finale this Sunday.

And what is not to love about the whole thing? The retro ’60s inspired ads feature a Betty Draper-like blonde ingenue with a “who, me?” look on her face. You know- the dream. The packaging itself is also vintage inspired- old fashioned typography on a box with a lovely floral design and a wallpaper like feel. Not unlike something you’d dig up in your grandmother’s trunks in the attic when you were a small child- if your grandmother was a rich white lady that is, which mine was not.

Obligatory Instagram shot

A gold pleather pouch house the shiny gold casings of both the compact and the tiny bullet sized lipstick (the size is true to lipstick size in the olden days). The overall effect is incredibly classy. Way too classy to carry around and wear on a daily basis, at least for me. I will have to save it to whip out only on special occasions- like during the intermission of an opera or whathaveyou, right after I catch the eye of a Daniel Craig lookalike and right before I make a fool of myself in front of him.

But in all seriousness- the creme rouge is soft and quite easy to apply, and the color is a classic shade suitable for just about all skin tones. The lipstick, though lovely, is a bright, pink red, that I don’t quite think can be pulled off by just anyone. At $25, the lipstick is a good collector’s item for vintage makeup junkies, but you’d get more use out of the $40 blush.

Fancy creme rouge making a mockery out of my other blush

I applaud Estee Lauder for reviving a part of its history, and only wish it wasn’t limited to just the one lipstick color and blush. They will launch a second collection to coincide with season 6 next year, so hopefully that can be remedied. The supply is highly limited, so get it at Esteelauder.com while it lasts. And don’t forget to catch the season finale of Mad Men this Sunday. I myself will be attending a dressy season finale party in Manhattan, where I expect to show off my newest toys at every opportunity.

Betty Draper would approve.

The Mad Men Limited Edition Collection was provided by Estee Lauder for review purpose. There is no pay for play unless specifically listed as advertorial or sponsored. See FAQs for more details.

When this dropped in my email yesterday, I did a mental fist pump. LABBIT WATCH! I love Kid Robot and own a few Dunny’s meself… as well as my Labbit.

Behind the Screen with BAFTA as part of Film4 Summer Screen at Somerset House with American Express®

Come on Jaws, I’ll only be gone for the weekend. You won’t even notice I’m not here. I’ve left out some carrot sticks for you, and a DVD of Carry On Camping.

The good ol’ British summer hasn’t been treating us well of late. I’ve suffered various maladies due to the ever changing nature of our fair climate, and have more than on one occasion dressed inappropiately. Today, I have a coat with me.

Even though the sun may not always shine, London is always full of wonderful summer specific events. The Film4 Summer Screen is one of those well known, and much loved events. I’ve never managed to get tickets because they always sell out/broke and/or everyone I know is rubbish and can’t do anything without at least a week or so worth of planning. (See my problem here?)

For those lucky enough to go to the Film4 Summer Screen at Somerset House, and especially if you’re mushy over movies, you can Go Behind the Screen with BAFTA at Somerset House with a series of talks which accompanies Film4 Summer Screen. This is your chance to hear filmmakers and industry insiders explore themes and subjects linked to the film programme – your own personal Film Club with some of the best names in the business. A taste of what is coming up is listed below:

Thursday 28 July, 19.00pm: John Barry’s Golden Touch
The late John Barry is undoubtedly one of cinema’s greatest composers. Well known for his outstanding, brand-defining scores for the Bond series from Dr. No through The Living Daylights, he also wrote the music for countless other major features: Petulia, The Lion in Winter, Walkabout, Midnight Cowboy, Out of Africa, Body Heat, among them. Over the years, he received 5 Oscars, a BAFTA and 4 Grammys awards, an amazing record which also reflects the high regard in which he was held by the industry. In this event, Barry’s musical sons and daughters take us through a rich array of his spectacular scores to celebrate his particularly golden touch.

Friday 29 July, 19.00pm: 2011 BAFTA Nominated Short Films
Featuring some of the UK’s brightest filmmaker talents of the future, join us for an hour of highlights from 2011′s BAFTA nominations for short film and short animation award including the animation winner: The Eagleman Stag (dir. Michael Please).

Saturday 30 July, 19.00pm: Joe Cornish in Conversation
Writer/Director Joe Cornish’s Attack the Block is one of the year’s biggest home-grown hits, a brilliantly inventive south-London set sci-fi horror where ‘inner city meets outer space’, as the tagline memorably puts it. We’re delighted to welcome the filmmaker ahead of tonight’s screening to discuss some of the movies which influenced him, from the work of directors John Carpenter and Walter Hill, to E.T. and action-packed 80s extravaganzas such as the first part of tonight’s double bill, Die Hard.

Sunday 31 July, 9.00pm: Wild about Wilder
Sunset Blvd, The Seven Year Itch, Some Like it Hot, Double Indemnity, The Apartment- there is something in Billy Wilder’s work for anyone who loves movies; over the course of nearly 60 years at the top of the film industry, Wilder amassed enough famous fans to fill Universal Studios and left us with some of cinema’s most indelible memories. Here, a few of these high profile fans celebrate some wonderful Wilder moments.

The full schedule can be found on the BAFTA site and tickets can be purchased through Somerset House.

Thursday 4 August
6.30pm Behind the Screen: Playing Games with Cinema, supported by Nintendo
9.15pm Scott Pilgrim Vs The World

God I really want to go to this. Perhaps I’ll just go by myself and meet a nice fanboy. #everyoneIknowiscrap

FUCK YEAH, ANOTHER RANDOM KAWS COLLAB!

Not just content with making labels for Kiehl’s and driving up the price of Creme de Corps, artist and designer, KAWS who if he likes it would put his ring on it is now making fancy filaments for your household staple, light bulbs. 1,000 sets will be sold, each with a red, purple and green filament bulb at the hotels’ retail shops located in New York, Los Angeles, and Miami.

Does the XX refer to The Standard Hotel’s voyeuristic views or just because he was too lazy to fashion anything else?**

You can buy ‘em here if you live nowhere near any of these locations (so 95% of my readers.)

It’s FLASHON darling! – Eley Kishimoto FLASH ON Week LFW SS11

Being uber jetlagged on the Friday meant I missed the press preview of Eley Kishimoto’s ‘FLASH ON’ Week exhibition. But it seemed that I’d dodged a proverbial bullet, as I was informed that it was hot, packed and with drink spillage all over people’s shoes.

I instead went by on the Saturday, where the exhibition was now open for public viewing, but was pleasantly calm, airy and cool. And this meant that the exhibitors could give me their full attention.
