Weird Crushes #MTVEMA

Everyone has a odd crush. Or in my case, I have several. Let me count the ways: Stephen Mangan, Greg Davies, that old kind of veiny forearmed guy from The Kooples ads – there are many more. When I was younger, all the girls I knew fancied Nick from Backstreet Boys or JC Chasez (no-one fancied Justin until he shaved his curly mop. I personally had a soft spot for Joey Fatone). I really fancied Anthony Kiedis (the first white guy to make white guy rapping acceptable, and no I don’t count Marky Mark). Even more so after I read his autobiography, Scar Tissue. What can I say, I like them complicated.

When I found out that MTV Playground would be taking me to the MTV EMA’s in Belfast I at first didn’t believe it and told them  to stop pulling my leg – but it then sunk in, and I was over the moon when I heard RHCP would be performing (due to said crush on Anthony Kiedis and general fan of the band and always wanting to see them live).

However imagine the sadness when I found out (in the Odyssey Arena) that RHCP wouldn’t be performing in the arena but down the road at an intimate gig at Ulster City Hall for 1000 fans.

Part of the Red Hot Chili Peppers set was shown on the screen in the arena. Teasing me! I managed to go through Kubler-Ross’s five stages of grief in a 3 minute chunk (a new personal best). I did find out afterwards that they spread the artists around at the Odyssey Arena (main show), Ulster City Hall (RHCP) and Belfast City Hall (Snow Patrol, Jason Derulo) but alas so close, but yet so far. Now it’s back to mournfully thumbing through my copy of Scar Tissue. Well, this time we were only about a kilometre apart, next time, perhaps half.

If I Were a Handsome Man #MTVPlayground

Finding clothes to wear on a regular basis is hard enough, let alone for events and occasions. I still haven’t finalised my outfit for the MTV EMAs - I am a naughty stylist.

I do tend to have a daily uniform of jeans, Docs, and man sweaters, shirts or blouses – I find it easy, comfortable and most of all WARM. I spend a lot of my time running around, so I can’t wear heels (or won’t wear heels). The amount of heels I’ve damaged on London cobbles makes me weep. If only I were a handsome man, like Steve McQueen or Jon Hamm. I’d probably spend all day staring at my reflection, but I could also wear suits everyday. I do like the cut of a nice suit, and they’re easily one of the most versatile pieces of clothing you can own. So many fabrics! So many styles! I bore everyone with my exclamations over hidden stitching and medium notched lapels. HA.

Belfast will also be freezing, so I will more likely than not add tights to my outfit, even though I still have my Texan tan. If I was in possession of a Y chromosome, I’d wear the DB Patrick Suit by Albam. The first Made in England suit from Albam, it’s 100% English wool (super warm), weaved with cashmere (even warmer), comes in charcoal (can be dressed up or down) and with a unstructured double breasted blazer, the suit cut for 2012. And it’s less than £500. With the extra money I’d save on buying it, I’d get a tailor to add a couple of darts in the back of the blazer to give it the Kent cut and purchase a nice pocket square for the finishing touch.

The DB Made in England Patrick suit from Albam is £480 and available from Albam stores and www.albamclothing.com. Thanks to Fashionising for the men’s suit trends for 2011-2012.

If I buy a t-shirt from Valley Clothing, can I get the sexy tattooed Johnny Depp doppelganger too?

I did a shoot yesterday with a make-up artist who I’ve never worked with before. She was top notch, and we had a lot in common, and we spent ages talking. She remarked that I seem to know a lot of stuff. I do know a lot of stuff.

One of my old housemates (who I hate, because she’s a dumb bitch who owes me money) was an idiot vegetarian. I say idiot vegetarian not because I think vegetarianism is idiotic, but she would bang on about animal welfare, and how disgusting we all were, and how Eva Longoria wore a fur coat and she hates her now, and I’d ask her about animal by-products, such as the leather boots she owned. She said that’s ok, because other people eat beef. Yeah, I replied, but you don’t. You may not advocate meat eating but benefiting from their hides when other people are eating meat makes no sense at all. Also she’d bang on about lots of other shit which I never listened to her about, but also she’d make some comments about cotton and why couldn’t everyone just wear it and it didn’t hurt anyone. That’s even more bullshit.

I also wonder about brands who hand out cotton tote bags willy nilly. Plastic isn’t great for the environment, but nor are these bags. There is no accountability to how they are made. No-one seems to know how bad the cotton industry actually is for our environment. I’m the worse person to try sell stuff too, because I question everything. And when I question things, people, especially brands don’t seem to have answers.

The humble cotton t-shirt is cheap and plentiful. You can pick them up for very cheap, or for a hefty price (because it says Supreme on it). But these big brands – do they know/or care where their raw material is coming from and the conditions caused by manufacture or production

I’ve met quite a few two people t-shirt outfits before usually two guy friends with one really handsome one and the best friend who is usually my cup of tea (I like ‘em insecure). Valley Clothing is the first t-shirt brand I’ve seen who uses water based inks for screenprints, which I was quite interested in. Somerset based duo Elliot and Dryden produce a limited edition run of 30 t-shirts of each of their designs, which are certified by The Carbon Trust and audited by Fair Wear Foundation – it has been tested for harmful substances and has been awarded the Confidence in Textiles seal, and they design all their artwork themselves. Pretty impressive for a pair of 20 year olds.

I also really like their model. He has a tattoo of my band name also.

And being an ex psychology student/lazy stylist – this Rorschach t-shirt ticks all my boxes. My daily uniform doesn’t fall far from the t-shirt and jeans tree.  I’ve stopped buying into cheap, disposable fashion, preferring independent designers and vintage.  Science of Style indeed.

You can read more about Valley Clothing in their interview with The Creative Book .

Oh Shue, why did you let them wax you?

No matter how gay Kara thinks Mr Shuester is, he is the hottest member of faculty I’ve seen in a damn long time. And he has abs you can grate cheese off. But where has his chest hair gone? Why did you let them pluck you like a chicken, Morrison? Your V is spectacular but without your goody trail, I’m afraid my flaming desire is slightly dampened. Slightly.

Whatever, I’m still hot for Shue.

At least you weren’t styled in American Apparel, and Terry Richardson didn’t shoot this.
