Adidas Originals, A Love Letter #JDHEROES #adiOriginalsJD

Did you know that the average height of the UK male is 5″8 and the average height of the UK lady is about 5″3? Being 5″7 I am considered somewhat of an anomaly, especially considering my Asian heritage, instead of being small and dainty, I’m a veritable giant. (Or giantess)

Perhaps that’s why I don’t tend to wear heels a lot. Oh, I own them. I own a lot of them. People upon seeing my closet often ask why they never see me wearing any, and also why I seem to wear a variation of the same clothes everyday. Well London and any city is bad for heels. Potholes, inclement weather, various puddles of unrecognisable detritus, the cobblestones at Somerset House… and don’t get me started on when it rains. As well as towering over almost every man I meet (Hello, I’m up here), I’ve always been more of a flats girl. Specifically, a nice pair of trainers.

If I had to pick out an iconic pair of trainers from my past (or present) wardrobe, they’d have to be a pair of Adidas’s. Oh the incarnations they’ve had. From my first sky blue pair (which promptly got so filthy I wept) to a pair of shell toes I lovingly maintained until my feet grew out of them, I do luvva the Adidas. What can I say? It’s a super stylish brand, their ads are on point, as are their collabs, clothes and their unique retro vibe. And they did the Team GB kit and London 2012 trainers both of which I own (BECAUSE I LOVE YOU LONDON).

This new Adidas trainer is called AdiHoney. Aww honey! With a flash of tartan lining, they stand out from the other nondescript white trainers around, and you know, make a statement without being impractical, and will leave you enough change  from your £60 to buy an umbrella from that guy outside the Tube.

Ain’t No Party Like a (Weight Watchers) Twitter Party #wwfashion

Not everyone can be so lucky (bahaha) to be able to drag me shopping me with them so I can be brutally honest and tell you what not to wear, and give you some things that you should wear. My dear friend Reena Rai and other bloggers will be on hand on Twitter for fash advice and will also be handing out Debenhams vouchers. Just how very exciting is that.

I don’t even hand out anything when I give style advice. Just hurt feelings.

So what and where are the most stylish & inspirational street in the world? #fromthestreets

To celebrate the launch of the Swatch New Gent Lacquered watch, Swatch has teamed up with the biggest fashion magazines from the world over, which is 17 fashion magazines in 8 different markets, from i-D, Dazed, Nylon, Qvest, Vice to Hong Kong’s Milk, to pick their favourite streets. You can vote for your favourite street #fromthestreets here and the competition ENDS 6PM BST (12PM CET). The street with the most votes gets to throw a once in a lifetime street party which you can also win a chance to go to.

There are so many streets one has yet to visit in the world. There’s so many places I haven’t actually visited in the world either. As each ambassador from each country makes their own video and conducts their own photoshoot to sell their street, a wealth of content is created – and you get to see their country through your eyes.

For London (I make a whoop here) – our ambassadors are Jamal Edwards of SBTV, who has picked Acton for Dazed’s entry.

21 year old Jamal Edwards, if you don’t know, is the founder of SB:TV (and yes, is in that Google Chrome advert), hailed by Q Magazine as one of the most influential people in music in March (and perhaps the new Simon Cowell, just hope he doesn’t hoist up his trousers that high) and a new entry on The Sunday Times Rich List. Jamal does personify the #fromthestreets brand message exceptionally well.

All the videos shot are incredibly interesting, with tons of fantastic imagery. You can vote for your favourite #fromthestreets street until 6PM BST tonight/12PM CET – incidentally when the competition on TSoS to WIN a Swatch New Gent Lacquered Watch ends

To enter: Simply RT this post on Twitter (or any of my Swatch #fromthestreets posts. (click the Twitter share button at the bottom or this link ) or you can do it the old fashioned way and email winstuff@thescienceofstyle.com. Competition ENDS on April 30th 2012 at 6pm BST (12PM CET)

That’s only a few people who say things like that to me. The majority of you are awesome people, and I have some really top notch readers. That’s why I’m offering you the chance to win a Swatch New Gent Lacquered watch in a colour of your choice! I have the red, but grow large, PICK ANYONE YOU WANT.

Hi Swatch, Thank You For My New Gent Lacquered Watch #fromthestreets

I enjoy a good timepiece. Nobody seems to wear watches anymore, which is a real shame. We rely too much on pulling out our phones, which is quite annoying, and what happens when your phone dies or gets stolen by someone on a bike? MADNESS! DESPAIR! SUBTERFUGE! (I may have over exaggerated)

As usual, I’m going off the point. You may remember that Swatch took me and a bunch of other fine bloggers to the MTV EMAs in Belfast back in October 2012, and we wholeheartedly enjoyed the whole experience, with vim and vigour, and much gusto. Swatch also gave us many watches, which I would love to photograph all together… but I gave the first one away as a birthday present. At last count, I had the Rankin x Swatch, The Swatch Lady in Aqua, the Swatch Touch and the special edition MTV EMAs Swatch which no-one is laying their grubby little paws on. And now, I have a Swatch New Gent Lacquered too!

I’m usually not too keen on watches with no numerals, or even ones with numerals sometimes. When I feel especially lazy, I wear a digital watch. But this watch is so pretty. I chose the red, after consulting with a work colleague (who was right) and I could almost watch the pretty mechanics all day…

The New Gent Lacquered was created for the young street savvy and stylish global audience, by showing off the heart of its workings, and what better way to show it off by taking some pictures on one of my favourite streets and areas of London, which are close to my heart (and its workings trololol). It’s not hipster haven Brick Lane, or shopping hell Oxford Street, but the Newburgh Quarter (and also Liberty since it is one of my favourite places in London.)

Swatch From The Streets

Why did I pick the Newburgh Quarter? Even though I’m born, bred and will always be a city girl at heart, the hustle and bustle of London does give me sensory overload. Especially when navigating the busy West End. I love cutting through the back streets and discovering new places, little boutiques and cafes to get away from it all. And I also love flowers. I admit, I hang around the flower stall at Liberty and watch all the guys buy flowers for their girlfriends and feel a bit jealous. Personally I think it’s the ultimate date indulgence. Wouldn’t you love to meet someone for a date outside the flower stall at Liberty AND they’ve got you a bunch of peonies?

Swatch From The Streets

Pah it’s never going to happen. Right around the corner from Liberty is the Newburgh Quarter, which is all cobble stones and independent shops. Why I especially love this street is the plethora of flowers – everywhere! Window boxes, crates of flowers – and the many benches dotted around for sitting down and resting your city weary legs.

The best part of Newburgh Street? In the day it’s pretty quiet, but at night, a lot of the stores have events and parties, spilling out onto the street. Newburgh at Night has definitely got to be one of my favourite times and places in the city.

Belfast, It’s a country that’s changin’ #MTVPlayground

It’s been busy times since I got back from Belfast, and a lot of people have been asking for photos and what I did apart from the EMAs. And it’s the last Scene@ video, checking out the up and coming musical talent in Belfast, a new generation of creative musical talents are currently lapping up the opportunities that now flow more freely in the peaceful wake of their country’s historical troubles.

The weekend was a pretty busy one, Saturday was our Swatch Day and Sunday before the EMAs we went on a tour to the Bushmills Distillery and lunched at the Bushmills Inn. I can’t say how much I enjoyed going to Belfast. I’ve never been to Ireland, but I truly enjoyed it. The city is beautiful, the people are incredibly lovely and welcoming, and whole atmosphere leading up to the MTV EMAs was supercharged. Belfast was a great city to host the EMAs as everyone, I mean, EVERYONE was so excited. It was pretty cool to be somewhere where there was a ton of appreciation for the event. I’m from London, so I’m pretty jaded, and if the awards took place in London, you know everyone would be complaining about roads being blocked off and hordes of screaming teenagers. But in Belfast, they just didn’t care about that. Enthusiasm abound it was, and it was brilliant.

The country is definitely a changin’

Not Just a Pretty Face #MTVPlayground

I had the pleasure of meeting Faye Dinsmore when I went to Belfast for the MTV EMAs. Faye is Ireland’s most successful model, signed to IMG, and just an incredibly nice girl to boot. We all went to the Bushmills Distillery together (which I am still yet to post on) and I discovered that she really likes Sudoku. She’s also Swatch MTV Playground’s 4th guest editor, and discusses in her 2nd video about how she created a platform for Ireland’s most burgeoning designers and creatives.

Keeping it British #MTVEMA

Although I wouldn’t say Jessie J is my musical cup of tea (although I do think she has an amazing voice and is very talented) I do like how she champions and wears a lot of British designers, with a lot of them just starting out. It’s extremely difficult to be a designer at any time, let alone in this current economic climate. Having an musical artist wear your pieces, is a huge coup and gets you great exposure, especially when your star just keeps on rising, like Jessie J. She also managed to do 4 outfits in one night, and my favourite was definitely this one.

When she stepped out on the red (pink!) carpet after her performance, she was wearing a Falguni and Shane Peacock printed dress with white Dr Martens, as she can’t wear heels as her foot is still healing. This was definitely my favourite look from her and I love that print. Shows how you can keep an outfit simple, but also striking.

Weird Crushes #MTVEMA

Everyone has a odd crush. Or in my case, I have several. Let me count the ways: Stephen Mangan, Greg Davies, that old kind of veiny forearmed guy from The Kooples ads – there are many more. When I was younger, all the girls I knew fancied Nick from Backstreet Boys or JC Chasez (no-one fancied Justin until he shaved his curly mop. I personally had a soft spot for Joey Fatone). I really fancied Anthony Kiedis (the first white guy to make white guy rapping acceptable, and no I don’t count Marky Mark). Even more so after I read his autobiography, Scar Tissue. What can I say, I like them complicated.

When I found out that MTV Playground would be taking me to the MTV EMA’s in Belfast I at first didn’t believe it and told them  to stop pulling my leg – but it then sunk in, and I was over the moon when I heard RHCP would be performing (due to said crush on Anthony Kiedis and general fan of the band and always wanting to see them live).

However imagine the sadness when I found out (in the Odyssey Arena) that RHCP wouldn’t be performing in the arena but down the road at an intimate gig at Ulster City Hall for 1000 fans.

Part of the Red Hot Chili Peppers set was shown on the screen in the arena. Teasing me! I managed to go through Kubler-Ross’s five stages of grief in a 3 minute chunk (a new personal best). I did find out afterwards that they spread the artists around at the Odyssey Arena (main show), Ulster City Hall (RHCP) and Belfast City Hall (Snow Patrol, Jason Derulo) but alas so close, but yet so far. Now it’s back to mournfully thumbing through my copy of Scar Tissue. Well, this time we were only about a kilometre apart, next time, perhaps half.
